Say NO to Smart Meters: 2025 Update

Across the world, utility companies continue to replace traditional analogue electricity, gas, and water meters with new-generation “Smart” Meters. The rollout is well underway in North America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

Despite what Big Energy wants you to believe — Smart Meters are NOT mandatory. You have the right to refuse them.

What Is a “Smart” Meter — and Why Are Energy Companies So Desperate for You to Have One?
Smart Meters monitor, measure, and communicate your household’s electricity, gas, and water usage data to your utility provider. They can operate autonomously or as part of a wireless “mesh” network, transmitting data around the clock using bursts of microwave radiation.

Many modern appliances now contain RFID chips that communicate directly with Smart Meters. This enables energy providers to log when and how each appliance is used — effectively tracking your daily habits.

They don’t tell you about:
1. Higher Bills
2. Constant Microwave Radiation
3. Privacy Loss
4. Home Security Risks
5. Remote Disconnections
6. Hacking Vulnerabilities
7. Behavioural Profiling
8. Corporate Profit Motives
Even Ofgem has confirmed that British Gas has misled customers about Smart Meters.

The Hidden Costs of Smart Meters
While energy companies claim installation is “free,” the costs are quietly passed on to consumers through energy bills.
Consumer group Which? has called for a halt to the rollout due to hidden costs and lack of real savings. Many users are reporting higher bills after installation.

Key figures:
1. DECC: Smart Meter rollout in the UK costs £11 billion, funded by consumers.
2. European Commission: Average cost per customer is £158–£198.
3. Government Impact Assessment: Dual-fuel installations cost £214.80, added directly to your bill.
Smart Meters are not free — and they will not automatically save you money.

2025: Have Smart Meters Improved?

What Has Improved
1. More Reliable Connectivity: Works even when you change suppliers.
2. Enhanced Security: Encrypted data via the Data Communications Company (DCC).
3. Better Accuracy: Fewer estimated billing errors.
4. Improved Compatibility: Works better with some smart home systems.

What Has Not Changed
1. No Guaranteed Savings: Bills only fall with changed behaviour.
2. Ongoing Privacy Concerns: Detailed data still reveals daily routines.
3. Radiation Exposure: Devices continue to emit low-level RF radiation.
4. Cybersecurity Risks: Hackers can still exploit vulnerabilities.
5. Hidden Rollout Costs: Consumers still fund the programme.

Solar Panel Integration Issues
Despite promises of “smart” compatibility, many Smart Meters fail to correctly recognise solar generation or exported power. This leads to inaccurate readings, inflated consumption figures, and unfair charges for solar households.
In other words — Smart Meters can make your free solar energy appear as paid usage.

My Personal Experience
As a British Gas customer with solar panels, I have witnessed these issues first hand:
1. The Smart Meter failed to recognise my solar panels.
2. The in-home monitor, Smart Meter, and online report all displayed different readings.
3. There was no clear indication of how much free solar energy I was generating.
4. My reported usage was three times higher — resulting in higher bills.

I was being charged for the free energy produced by my own solar panels.
After demanding removal, my Smart Meters were replaced with traditional ones — and the problem disappeared.
Smart Meters don’t work.

Know Your Rights
Energy companies are pushing Smart Meters aggressively through misleading statements such as:
1. “A new law requires everyone to have a Smart Meter.”
2. “The Government mandates Smart Meter installation.”
3. “Smart Meters don’t emit microwaves.”

All of these claims are false.
There is no law requiring you to accept a Smart Meter. You have the right to refuse installation and prevent your utility from monitoring or controlling your energy use.

What we say about our rights
Quite simply, there is no law or legislation forcing anyone to have a Smart Meter; for our physiology and sense of well-being to be impacted, for our utility supplies to be placed onto the web, for our personal safety and security to be put at risk, for our privacy to be violated, or for our personal behaviour at home to be analysed, profiled and miniaturised.

Each and every one of us has indefeasible rights that cannot be given to us by another human being nor lawfully taken away from us. We are living, breathing, human souls and we can damn well refuse a Smart Meter on whatever grounds we like. Big Energy may try to tell us otherwise, and in the process perpetrate a fraudulent misrepresentation and distortion of reality.

Remember — energy companies provide a service. They are not in charge. You are.
